Bad Martha’s Farmer’s Brewery

The first brewery in Falmouth you need to visit is my personal favorite – Bad Martha’s Farmers Brewery. This is the second location for Bad Martha’s, which opened its first taproom on Martha’s Vineyard in 2014. The East Falmouth taproom opened in 2019, and it’s been popular ever since.

A quick backstory (for us beer nerds) – Back in 1602, during the very first European expedition to Cape Cod, the English explorer, Bartholomew Gosnold, had an “encounter” with a mermaid named “Bad Martha” who guided him to a unique ingredient.

Gosnold then incorporated this ingredient into a batch of ale for his crew. And today, Bad Martha’s Brewery uses that very same ingredient, paying homage to its cool origins.

Interesting backstory, right?

So Bad Martha’s isn’t near many of the local restaurants in Falmouth (as in the downtown area, Falmouth Heights, or Woods Hole), which makes it less known (to some).

It is near Cape Cod Winery, which make it a fun area for bachelorette/bachelor parties. But it has such a great layout and vibe that it’s becoming more popular.

What I enjoy the most about Bad Martha’s (besides the great beer) is the incredible pizza.

No really, the pizza and food are to die for.

We’ve had both the regular and cauliflower crust pizza and both were outstanding. The staff is quick to fill your beer and food orders too so you never have to wait long. You don’t have to leave your picnic table because Bad Martha’s menu and ordering is done directly from your phone – quick and easy.

And as far as beer, I’ve been into hoppy beers lately, so I like the 508 IPA. My wife enjoys the sour ales so she’s into their Lemon Raspberry Sour right now. We’ve tried the flight too so we can sample of the seasonal beers.

The last time we went to Bad Martha Farmer’s Brewery, we had friends visiting Falmouth. He’s a big craft beer fan and enjoys local breweries, so we brought them here. We first took them to a few places in town, but their favorite was definitely Bad Martha’s.

He loved the good beer and (of course) the food. They enjoyed sitting in the outside seating area with all the games and live music. It’s a laid-back place to hang out with friends and enjoy quality beers.

Aquatic Brewing

The next craft brewery in Falmouth is Aquatic Brewing. It opened in 2020 by local residents Greg Horning and Alex Bergman, Aquatic Brewing offers a great selection of beer, both IPAs and German styles.

Located close to downtown Falmouth, the small tasting room is a little back off the main road. Parking spaces are limited, but it’s walking distance to the downtown area and public parking.

Overall, Aquatic Brewing offers a more intimate taproom experience with exceptional beers and crew. It is limited to indoor seating, and you can bring your own food or enjoy some of their light snacks.

Naukabout Brewing Company

Rounding out the craft breweries near Falmouth MA is Naukabout Brewing Company in Mashpee. We visited the main taproom but they also have a pop-up location during the summer months at Mashpee Commons.

Appropriately titled “The Garden Party”, the Mashpee Commons location is a family friendly spot that offers live music, beers and food vendors.

The main taproom overlooks a small pond and has a cool outside-leveled seating area. There are plenty of seats outside and outdoor games to play. We enjoyed some delicious pretzel bites with cheese dip while watching the sunset from our picnic tables – not much better than that!

The craft beers have uniquely Cape names like “Beach Hair” and “Dunes of the Cape Milkshake IPA”, a nod to “Escape” (the Pina Colada song). They even have their own house-made rootbeer.

Naukabout Brewing Company also has a great line-up of local musicians and comedians. Great spot to see some live music, especially outside during the warmer months. This family-owned brewery has created a perfect place for folks to hang out and enjoy fine craft ales.
