Public Golf Courses near Westerly RI
Winnapaug Country Club
184 Shore Rd
Westerly, RI 02891
401-600-1747
If you’re looking for a unique golfing experience, look no further than Winnapaug Country Club. Winnapaug is right along Rhode Island’s shoreline, with the Winnapaug Pond on one side and ocean views of the Atlantic on the other. This historic 18-hole championship course will definitely challenge golfers of all skill levels.
Although it’s not as old as the Newport Country Club, this course was originally designed by the legendary Donald Ross and established in 1922. Recently they worked with the Nicklaus Design Group (owned by legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus himself) and Union Studios Architecture & Community Design to create an exceptional golfing experience.
The Winnapaug golf course has a par of 72, and you’ll be playing over 6400 yards. The fairways, water hazards, and sand traps have been designed to challenge and improve your skills.
The course also offers a range to warm up before your round, perfect for short irons. Plus, there is a chipping and putting area where you can sharpen your short-game skills.
My recommended restaurant for lobster rolls: Two Little Fish (300 Atlantic Avenue in Westerly, RI)

Hailed as one of the best public golf courses in Rhode Island (by Golf Digest), this public course has a lot to offer. From the tips, it plays at over 6800 yards, so it might be the longest public golf course in Rhode Island.
It was designed by Geoffrey Cornish and others in 1992 and has been a hidden gem ever since. To make a tee time, you have to call the clubhouse, but the rates are very fair for the high quality of this full length championship course.
The course looks like it was carved out of a pine forest, with the fairways and greens always in great shape. You get to enjoy the beautiful country setting throughout your round.
My recommended spot for a slice of pizza or grinder: Town Pizza II (18 Kingstown Rd, Richmond, RI 02898)
Beaver River Golf Club
343 Kingstown Rd
Richmond, RI 02892

Beaver River is the best pick for value, in my opinion. You can play 18 during the week with a cart for $59; on the weekends, it only goes up to $64. This is a steal for this price and the course’s quality.
Beaver River white tees play around 5600 yards with a par of 70. The course is not long, but there are a lot of doglegs and hidden shots, so you need to be accurate with your long irons and off the tee.
It has a lot of hills; I would never recommend walking the course, which makes for some interesting decisions on the course because you either can’t see your target or you will get a huge advantage hitting downhill.
This hidden gem is my favorite place for a cheap challenge and is only minutes off Route 95.
My recommended restaurant for post-golf dinner and drinks: Wood River Bar & Grille (1139 Main Street in Richmond, RI)
Private Golf Courses near Westerly RI
Weekapaug Golf Course
265 Shore Rd
Westerly, RI 02891
401-322-0840
If you’re looking for a challenging and picturesque 9-hole golf course, look no further than Weekapaug Golf Club. It is a private member-owned golf club in Westerly. This seaside gem has been ranked as one of the top courses in the entire world.
The par 36 course boasts some seriously tight fairways, strategically placed hazards, and challenging greens that will put your skills to the test. Originally designed by renowned architect Philip Wogan and former owner Sprocky Urso in 1967, the course has undergone recent renovations that have only added to its allure.
With newly renovated tee grounds, over 40 Scottish-style bunkers, and an open-links-style landscape, Weekapaug Golf Club will surely be a course you won’t soon forget.
My recommended restaurant for breakfast: The Cooked Goose (92 Watch Hill Road in Westerly, RI)

The Misquamicut Club
60 Ocean View Hwy
Westerly, RI 02891
401-348-8213
I will include Misquamicut on this list because it is supposed to be an unreal track…but it is exclusive and difficult to get to play unless you are a member.
The course was founded in 1895 and has gone through different editions, but some of the course architects were Ross, Cornish, Raynor, and Bendelow. This is the mount rushmore of golf course designers, so you know it is a course you would want to play.
The course, range, and putting green are immaculate. The front 9 has rolling hills and curvy greens, and the back is across the street next to the beach and is a flat track.
From the tips, it plays at 6226 yards with a par of 69 and has an unusual par-3 finishing hole on 18. If you ever get the chance to play this exclusive course, do not hesitate to do it and enjoy the beauty.
My recommended restaurant for post-golf drinks and fun: Paddy’s Beach Club (159 Atlantic Avenue in Westerly, RI 02891)
Shelter Harbor Golf Club
1 Golf Club Dr
Charlestown, RI 02813
401-322-0600
A member-owned private equity club, Shelter Island offers exceptional dining and golf experiences. Shelter Harbor Golf Club is set on sprawling 400 acres of breathtaking open space near the Atlantic Ocean.
Located in Westerly and Charlestown, the Club was created with a deep commitment to preserving the natural environment.
For those lucky enough to play this course, there is an insane golf facility to help with all aspects of your game. The range has tee boxes in six different spots to attack the target greens from different angles. It also has a chipping area, a putting green to work on the short game, and a private area to get a golf lesson.
Golfweek has ranked Shelter Harbor as the 55th Best Modern Course in the U.S. Shelter Harbor was also listed #177 on Golf Digest America’s Top 200 Courses.
My recommended local coffee shop: Dave’s Coffee (5193 Old Post Road in Charlestown, RI 02813)
