7 Golf Courses near Wells Maine You Should Play This Season

Whether you are vacationing or live in the area, there are lots of solid golf courses near Wells Maine, to choose from. Wells is a quiet beach town on the Atlantic Ocean about 90 minutes north of downtown Boston.

Despite being close to Boston, it feels like a throwback to years ago. The area isn’t too busy (yet) compared to other New England summer hot spots. If you are lucky enough to live in beautiful Wells Maine, I am certainly jealous.

This list of top golf courses near Wells Maine will help you get the most out of your time there. I’ll share some of golf courses near Wells Maine, and highlight the best local spots to eat.

But promise me one thing – if you are only briefly in the area, go to Congdon’s for their donuts. You will thank me later.

Ok, back to golf…

And since this New England site covers food and golf, I’ll list a popular restaurant near the course. Just in case you want to grab food before (or after) a day of golf.

This list will also include the public golf courses near Wells. If you know exactly the town you are looking to golf in, here is a breakdown so you can jump directly to that section:

These are the top golf courses near Wells Maine – but tell me, did your favorite course make the list?

Golf Courses near Wells Maine

Old Marsh Country Club

Old Marsh was designed by Brian Silva and opened in 2008.  This course was designed for target golf, so you need to be accurate with your tee shot and understand your club distances well.

If you hit the ball off-target, you will find either a marsh, a bunker, trees…. or the water. Once your approach shot reaches the green, you must deal with fast, sloped greens to make par. Definitely a challenge but a great option for golf courses near Wells Maine, to put your skills to the test.

My recommended local spot for amazing donuts: Congdon’s Doughnuts (1090 Post Rd, Wells, ME 04090) – my favorite donut is the honey dip right out of the oven. Melts in your mouth!

Merriland Farm Golf Course

Merriland Farm is a 9-hole Par-3 course in Wells that is a great value play.  The course is wide open with a few trees and ponds.  The longest hole is only 120 yards, so this is a great test for your short game.

They have club rentals available with balls, so if you are in the area for a beach vacation, this is an excellent option if you don’t want to bring your clubs.

Golf Courses near Wells Maine: York

The Ledges Golf Course

The Ledges golf club was designed by William Bradley Booth, a Maine native, and he utilized the area’s natural landscape to make a challenging course.  The greens are fast, so try to have your approach shot below the hole.

There are elevated tees and greens, which are fun to play but make the course difficult to walk, and I would recommend a cart.

There are some blind shots and hidden ponds throughout the course…but there is an app you can download that could help.  The app has GPS, a scorecard, tee times, and food ordering.

Montaup Country Club in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Image of a golf flag and putting green near a small pond.

Golf Courses near Wells Maine: Kennebunkport

Cape Arundel Golf Club

Cape Arundel is a short par 69, 18-hole course, but it does have some challenging and scenic holes.  The greens are fast, and the rough is thick, so you must be accurate.

There are several holes where you hit over the river-like water hazards, which is a cool challenge.

The course has two negatives: it is BYOB, and the practice facility is only for members.

My recommended local spot for Drinks and food on a sailboat: Spirit of Massachusetts Restaurant (4 Western Ave, Kennebunk, ME 04043)

Golf Courses near Wells Maine: Cape Neddick, Maine

Cape Neddick Country Club

This course is a unique collaboration between Donald Ross and Brian Silva. Ross designed the original 18 holes of championship golf in 1919, and Silva helped with a redesign project in 1999.

The front-9 is open and offers the chance for a low score out of the clubhouse.  However, the back 9 is narrower and offers a variety of challenges to come in with a good score.

The pace of play was very fast, which is always good when you are vacationing and want to go out for cocktails after the round.

Golf Courses near Wells Maine: Sanford

Sanford Country Club

Sanford CC is located about halfway between Wells and the New Hampshire border.  It offers a unique experience in the middle of a dense forest, providing solid conditions on the tees, fairways, and greens.

The fairways can be narrow within the trees. There are quite a few doglegs to work around.  The greens are small and require a good short shot to set yourself up for a two-putt.

Golf Courses near Wells Maine: Kennebunk

Webhannet Golf Club

Webhannet is a semi-private course located right next to the Atlantic Ocean.  The course is in great shape, with winding fairways and some greens surrounded by water hazards.

The greens are the best challenge on the course because of their slopes. Some even have two-tiers you have to navigate with the flat stick.  The course provides a challenging but fun round of golf.

And those are the top golf courses near Wells Maine!

What do you think? Have you golfed at these spots? Would you add anything to the list?

More importantly – did you try the donuts at Congdon’s?

Growing up here, I wanted to highlight my favorite places to golf and eat while sharing what makes New England unique.

And so New England Golf and Grub was created.
