A Golfer’s Guide to the 9 Best Golf Courses near Falmouth MA

There are plenty of golf courses near Falmouth MA, to test your golf skills this season. When you make it over the Bourne Bridge into Cape Cod, Falmouth, is one of the first towns you drive through. Also known as the “gateway to Cape Cod”, Falmouth is a popular spot with great golf, beaches, and restaurants.

The golf courses near Falmouth MA are some of the best 18-hole courses on beautiful Cape Cod. Some of them are private, so you have to know a member, but the public courses are in great shape. You don’t have to drive all the way to the Upper Cape for a unique golf experience.

And since this New England site covers food and golf, I’ll list a popular restaurant near the course. Just in case you want to grab food before (or after) a day of golf.

Golf courses near Falmouth MA

Falmouth Country Club

Situated alongside cranberry bogs in the center of Falmouth, this course has 27 holes, and it is easy to get a tee time and play a fast-paced round.

The Osprey course is the 18-hole championship golf course: it is flat, with some doglegs, but the tricky part is the sloped greens and well-positioned ponds.

The Talon course is the 9-hole: this is wide open, but bunkers and trees make you think about where you want your tee shots to land.

My recommended local spot for Home-cooking: Crabapples (553 Palmer Ave, Falmouth, MA 02540)

Cape Cod Country Club

Cape Cod CC is an 18-hole golf course championship course that is the perfect venue for a round of golf after you get home from the beach. The course is in excellent condition, and most greens are sloped.

The front 9 plays relatively flat, except for Hole 1, which has a severely elevated green. The back 9 has a lot of hills and elevated greens, and the coolest one is Hole 14, which has a volcano green, so you need to be accurate with the approach shot. The back challenges you with blind shots and doglegs, but that always makes the round more interesting!

My recommended local spot for Pizza/Beers/Sports Bar: Dino’s Pizza and Dino’s Sports Bar (401 MA-151, Mashpee, MA 02649)

Paul Harney Golf Course

Paul Harney golf club is an executive style par 60, 3600-yard course with six par-4s. The rolling fairways and greens will challenge your irons and approach shots, so don’t get too cocky.

If you want a calf workout like Michelson, walking this course will get the job done. To keep you honest, the fairways are lined with trees and have some bunkers in dangerous locations.

This is one of the best executive golf courses near Falmouth MA, with a challenging course to work on your game.

My recommended local spot for Pub food and beer: Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub (273 Main St in Falmouth)

The Cape Club

The Cape Club is a classic New England par 72 course with tree-lined lush fairways and subtly-sloped greens. The narrow re-contoured fairways make accuracy a key. You don’t want to go in them, but these are the softest sand traps I’ve ever hit out of.

The elevated greens roll true and fast, and it always helps to have GPS in the cart to check your distances. They also have a recently renovated clubhouse after undergoing extensive changes and renovations.

My recommended local spot for Pizza/Mediterranean and Dark and Stormy’s: Chapoquoit Grill (410 W Falmouth Hwy, Falmouth, MA 02540)

Sacconnesset Golf Club

Rees Jones designed Sacconnesset, an elite Massachusetts golf course, which plays over 7200 yards from the back tees. The tees and fairways are PGA level, and it has immaculate greens, I’m sure, making the membership cost worth it. It’s not on the water, but the breeze from Buzzards Bay can be felt on most holes.

Rees Jones courses usually have strategically placed bunkers, but this course has a lot of ‘clawed bunkers,’ shaped like raptor hands that will give you nightmares when you think you hit a great shot.

Golf courses near Falmouth MA: Pocasset

Pocasset Golf Club

Pocasset is a private club designed by Donald Ross and opened in 1916. It is pristine from tee to green, and not only is the layout challenging, but it is also windy. Ross always plays tricks with his greens, and this is no different.

Protected by bunkers and thick rough, the greens are fast and sloped, so don’t worry if you 3-putt a few times. I know I did.

My recommended local spot for Mudslides and classic New England food: Chart Room (1 Shipyard Ln, Cataumet, MA 02534)

Golf courses near Falmouth MA: Woods Hole

Woods Hole Golf Club

Historic Woods Hole GC was opened way back in 1899—this short, quirky course has a unique layout that is always a challenge. The course is in fantastic condition, and the small greens roll true and fast.

You will have to deal with the wind off the bay, but the views will keep you calm. The fairways roll over hills and valleys, so use your tee shots to get into attacking zones for your approach shots.

Golf courses near Falmouth MA: Mashpee

Quashnet Valley Country Club

Quashnet is a Geoffrey Cornish 18-hole public golf course that is my favorite in the area. This is my favorite course because it is a great value, always has tee times available, has a fast pace of play, and is a worthy challenge.

The front 9 is narrow, with OB on both sides of most fairways because of trees, ponds, and fescue. The back 9 is more open but has more elevation. This leads to sloped greens and blind shots that increase the difficulty for average golfers like me.

*FUN FACT: the 75-yard ‘driving range’ is free…but you have to pick up the balls off the range and bring them back to the hitting zone.

My recommended local spot for Ice Cream: Smitty’s Homemade Ice Cream (538 Falmouth Rd, Mashpee, MA 02649)

Golf courses near Falmouth MA: Bourne

Brookside Golf Club

Brookside club should be renamed ‘Hill-side’ because of the layout, but it is a fun course to play. It reminds me of courses I’ve played in New Hampshire, where if it’s your first time playing, you might be confused about where to hit the ball.

The elevation changes affect the tees, fairways, and greens, so you always want to see which way the hills are sloping before you hit. The course is short at 6300 yards from the tips, but the hills, trees, bunkers, and water demand accuracy.

This course is an equalizer for golfers because you don’t always get rewarded for hitting long; the fairways slope, so it’s not always a guarantee your ball will stay in the short grass. My advice is to keep it simple and play smart.
